7/13/1999 Al Harris - aharris@seatimes.com

My thanks to Lon Huckaby for recommending this great website. My grandmother's family emigrated to Nebraska from Walter. She was Lydia Gies(1911-1987), daughter of Henry Gies(1874-1942) & Katherine Alles(1873-1961). I was blown away when I looked at the 1909 photo contributed by Doug Klippert showing his Grandmother, Magdalene Rohn. You see, I have a photo of the Gies family that stayed behind in Walter, taken at the same time, against the same scenic backdrop, and presumably on the same hay-strewn floor! Incredible! It was also great to hear that my relative Lucille Gies-Whitman has been in communication with some of our Gies relations in Germany. I can't wait to find out more. Thank you so much for maintaining this wonderful site.

1/7/2001 Liz Sommer - lasommer@juno.com

I would be ever so grateful if anyone could provide information on the marriage or families of Eliabeth LICHTENBERG and a "Mr. SCHOESSLER". They had two children: born 1906; Theodore, born 1909; Pauline. Elisabeth re-married early 1912 to Georg KAMMERZELL and they emigrated to the US. Whether Theodore was aware of this 'adoption' is a mystery as he died in 1982 never mentioning it to his children. Other descendants of Georg and Elisabeth were told that "Mr. SCHOESSLER" died in Russia. (Georg KAMMERZELL, I am told was first married to Mary Katherine ILLS. She died in Russia 1909 surrounding the birth of their son Christian.)

1/10/2001 Hank - noma@ejourney.com

Have recently found this site, which has provided a wealth of information regarding my Grandparents who were born in Walter,Russia. Their Names were Jacob Dorn and Katherine Elizabeth Walter. Married in Walter on Jan. 04, 1890, left for the USA in Nov.1901. I am interested in information on my Fathers side of the family. All I know at this time is he was born in Russia in 1901 His Mother was born Maria Catherina Herrmann, May 07,1878, in LaPowka, Russia. If anyone has info on this family, or the town of LaPowka, Russia, I would appreciate hearing from you. This is a great site. Thanks!

2/10/2001 Lanell Linker Bennett - eraser@hevanet.com

Glad I found your website, it's great. I am trying to find anyone related to my grandfather Johan George Linker who was born in Walter in 1870. I have not been able to find his parents names. The only clue I have is a Jacob and Elisabeth Schoessler who are on my father Rudolph's baptismal certificate. I assume they are his sponsors or godparents. It says ?aufpaten waren before their names. I'm wondering if this could be a sister and brother-in-law of Joh George or some other connection. The baptism occurred in Ritzville in September 1909. Any info anyone might have would be deeply appreciated.

4/9/2001 Ruth Gies - rgies@odessaoffice.com

I have been searching for my husband's granfather for years! He is a Russia/German from the village of Walter, Russia. He had a brother Geroge b. 1880 to same parents and one or two sisters. I have a picture of his mother and one sister (name unknown). This was probably smuggled out of country. There are no names on the photo. George left Russia due to war draft. It is not clear as to when they both came to US. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Heinrich Gies, b. 1878 to Margaret Butherus/Henry Gies. Thank you, Ruth Geis

4/12/2001 Sue Pattyn - coloradowriter@rocketmail.com

Trying to find ancestry of Catherine Elisabeth Amend (dtr of Johannes Amend & Katherine Margaretha Hill, both of Walter. Catherine Elisabeth married and was widowed twice times before marrying my great grandfather, Harding and their leaving Russia together with 16 children. First marriage was to Kammerzell, second was to Geist. The information I seek is regarding her parents heritage . . . her parents were both born in Walter but I have no information on their parents or grandparents (ultimately the ancestors who emigrated from Germany). My address is coloradowriter@rocketmail.com

4/22/2001 Julie Wilson - julie223@earthlink.net

I am looking for any information on the family names of KISTER or KAUFMAN in the town of Walter or Frank or even Grotrihn. My great-grandfather's name was Adam Kister. He was born in Walter. His second marriage was to Margaret Katherine Kaufman. They arrived at Ellis Island in 1900 and according to the passenger list, they had previously lived in Grotrihn. I think there was a Christof Kister who might have been Adam's uncle. According to Adam's death certificate, his father was Henry Kister. I want to know if Henry and Christoff were indeed brothers. If so, was their father's name John? Who was Adam's mother? Why don't women's names ever get listed? It is very difficult to track the female lineage so any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Margaret Kaufman (Adam's wife) had three sisters. How did Adam come to meet/marry Margaret Kaufman? Was she Jewish or German? Who were her parents? Thank you for any information you can give. This is a great site!

6/13/2001 faye burkart-klingenberg - fayerene@hotmail.com

I appreciate having this great site! I am interested in any information regarding the Burkart or Burchardt and Benner families from Walter. I would be happy to share information with others also. My greatgrandparents, Conrad Andrew Burkart and Mary Benner/Burkart arrived in the U.S. in 1885 and settled in Culbertson, Nebraska. They later moved to Colorado. Their fifth child, my grandmother, Marie Burkart married August Klingenberg and moved to California. I would like to find out the name of the ship and which port they came into.

6/16/2001 Mary E Spencer - mspencer@dainrauscher.com

My grandparents are John and Amalia Dell from Lincoln, NE. They came from Walter-Khutor, Russia we believe in 1905-1908. I have been researching on EllisIsland records site but cannot find them. We thought the family name was spelled Doell and the o was eliminated in the USA due to omlauts. I have tried various spellings with no luck. Grandma's family name was Hill. My mother is Betty Dell Wright and there were eleven children in her family all born in Lincoln. Talking to my mother, I know I have relatives with many names from Walter, Russia. We have a few pictures but appear to be taken when they were first in this country. Perhaps a naive question, but does anyone know why my grandparents would not be listed as Doell (Dell) on a ship's manifest coming from Walter, Russia? Any other spellings besides: Doell, Dell, Doll, etc...

7/11/2001 faye burkart-klingenberg - fayerene@hotmail.com

I am writing again to make sure my e-mail address is noted. fayerene@hotmail.com. Did any of your family members come to America in 1885? I am trying to find out the name of the ship and the port for my great-grandparents, Conrad Burghardt and Maria Benner, who settled in Nebraska and Colorado.

Teresa, Your site is great. You must have spent a lot of time on it so far. I have been looking on it for a while now but I am having trouble finding Walter(s) as a surname. My maiden name is Walters. My family comes from a Hutterite colony out of South Dakota then Europe. I am wondering if you have any information on the Walter name that comes from a Hutterite colony of Deutschkreuz and later in Wallachia and Ukraine. I would be very grateful for any information or direction you could give me.

8/16/2001 cecil cromwell jr - ccromwelljr@msn.com (send a GED that is being posted)

Hello! My name is Cecil Cromwell jr. I am a Walter, Russia descendant. Our family names are Reiswig, Woitt, Alles, Baker, Schissler etc. Would like to know and share info with anyone on these lines. Please email me. Haven't had much response from other family members except for my own close relations. Cecil jr.

The following are missing their email addresses for correspondence: If anyone may have copied this material in the past with the emails addresses, I would love to add them to each message. Recently changing servers caused my miva files to become unreadable, I was lucky to have copies of the text, but would really appreciate the email addresses that went with these. Darn computers!

Teresa I just returned from Germany and Russia, while I was in Germany I visited a family of Stuckerts in Waldec, the mothers maiden name is Begel and her mothers maiden name is Buderus, I think it would be the same as your (Butherus). Her Mothers name is Katharine, born about 1886 and Grandfather is Conrad Buderus, born probably around 1856-66. She is from Walter and was deported to Siberia where she married a Stuckert. She or they do not have a pc so it is difficult to communicate with her but thru her grandson I hope they will be on the internet soon. I tried to download your Butherus gedcom but it fails. Let me know if you can help connect these two together, she is one nice person, I wanted to put her in my pocket

Hi, Since neither of your village coordinators for Walter have e-mail addresses I am sending this to you. I have been doing extractions from the Ellis Island Web Site based solely on surname and only in those that came from Russia that are German/Russian in which I recognize the village. I have transcribed them into an Excel spreadsheet format. Could you contact Jean or the other village coordinator for Walter and see if they would like these files. The other area of these filesthat needs to be considered as a large number of them said that they were from Saratov (city or province unknown), this could be for a number of reasons. I have some of these records also for various surnames. These would require work

Parents: Mollie Fritzler (Walter, Russia via S. America to Ellis Island on the S.S. Main. Mollie married John Gies and they both traveled on the S.S. Main to Ellis Island to settle in Walla Walla, WA; then during WW II, moved to Bremerton, WA and subsequently to Seattle, WA. Both parents are deceased. Robert is now 66 and has one brother, Richard, who is seven years older. I know there is a Hill connection in the Walla Walla days and also one of Robert's Fritzler Aunt (Louise) is married to Al Hill - all Fritzlers live in Seattle. I would like to gather as much information about Robert's parents, relatives, lives, and pictures and, of course, am willing to donate/contribute funds for this information. Also, I would be interested in obtaining Mrs. Roth's book, when published. This information would allow me to present Robert with a scrapbook of his and his family's life, much of which is sketchy. Lucille Whitman (Bob's Aunt in Walla has been very helpful in getting me started and I am fortunate to have a computer which greatly cuts back on library trips, etc. I must mention that Robert has no clue I am searching his heritage as this is a surprise gift to him. Fortunately, he does not access my computer. Thank you so much for any further information. Please remember, if there are pictures, I am more than happy to pay for duplication and shipping, etc. Again, thank you one and all for any assistance you can provide me.

Virginia ---It was nice to find your message posted today on the Walter, Russia website. I have to admit I haven't checked on the website lately, so it is pure coincidence that I happened to check on the very day you posted your message. I was unfamiliar with your Robert, his brother Richard, or any of the descendants of John Gies & Molly Fritzler. However, I am quite familiar with the records of John & Molly, and John's parents Jacob Gies (b.1875-d.1924) and his wife Katherine Hill (b.1876-d.1961), and John's grandparents Henry John Gies & his wife Katherine Burkhardt. I am descended from a different branch of the Gies family. My mother's mother (my Grandmother) was Lydia Gies(b.Oct.6,1911-d.Aug.1987), daughter of Henry Gies(b.Jan.26,1874-d.July 28,1942) & his wife Katherine Alles(b.Jan.27,1873-d.June 1,1961). Henry was the older brother of your Robert's Grandfather Jacob, and whereas Jacob took his family from Walter to Walla Walla, WA, my Great-Grandfather Henry took his family from Walter to Lincoln & then Keystone, NE.

There was also a third brother, Christian Gies(b.abt.1882-d.?) & his wife Katherine (b.abt.1882-d.?), who took their family from Walter to Greeley, CO. The three brothers and their families left their parents, Henry John Gies & Katherine Burkhardt, in Walter, Russia along with another brother named Conrad and a sister named Elizabeth and their families. I do have a family photo taken in Walter just prior to Christian coming over to America, although I know that Lucille Whitman also has this same photo and you may have already obtained a copy from her. I have been in touch with Lucille and she is just wonderful. We had the pleasure of being able to visit her in person a little over a year ago in Walla Walla, and besides being such a nice person she is also a great resource for you since she is your Robert's father's sister, a much closer relation than I.

The "Hill connection" that you mention is Katherine Margaret Hill(b.Apr.23,1876-d.Aug.10,1961), the wife of Jacob Gies (b.Oct.3,1875-d.Sept.1924), your Robert's Grandparents on his father John's side.
Here is a summary of what I know:
Henry John Gies & Katherine Burkhardt lived in Russia, in the German colony of Walter (near the Volga River) and had numerous children during the 1870's and early 1880's. These children included Henry(b.1874), Jacob(b.1875), Christian(b.abt.1882), John Adam, Elizabeth(known as "Dorliz"), and Conrad. Three of these brothers:(Henry, Jacob & Chris) emigrated to the U.S.A.

Henry J.Gies married Katherine Margaret Alles in Walter, Russia on Jan.15,1893. They had six children while in Walter, three of which survived until adulthood:

1)Henry Gies b.Nov.23,1894 & d.Sept.30,1895, living only 10 months.
2)Henry Gies b.May 27,1896 & d.July 29,1898, living two years & two months.
3&4)Katherine Gies & her twin Elizabeth Gies b.July 28,1901. Katherine lived on, but Elizabeth died May 31,1902, living just a little over 10 months.
5)Elizabeth Gies b.Sept.27,1903
6)John Gies b.June 28,1905

A book on the history of Keystone, NE places their date of emigration to Nebraska in 1907. The Henry Gies family sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to New York, and arrived in Lincoln, NE, where they lived for three years. Their next daughter & son, Marie and Fred were born during this period in Lincoln, NE prior to their arrival in Keystone and they went on to have two more children in Keystone:
7)Marie Gies b.Sept.8,1907
8)Fred Gies b.Mar.21,1910
9)Lydia Gies b.Oct.6,1911 (my Grandmother)
10)Theodore "Ted" Gies b.Jan.18,1914
Henry Gies & family had come to Keystone on May 13,1910, under contract to work with the sugar beets for a Mr.Carter, but stayed on to farm on their own. Henry Gies farmed for three years, and then moved to the town of Keystone, living in the house known as Grandma Dunwoody's. Here he had a harness and shoe shop until 1916, when he once again took up farming. Henry first farmed on the Llooyd's place, then worked for the Mannon's. In 1919, he got his own place on White Tail Creek, northwest of Keystone, & farmed there until his death on July 28,1942. Katherine lived on with her children until June 1,1961.
Your branch of the Gies family: Jacob Gies(b.Oct.3,1875) & his wife Katherine Margaret Hill(b.Apr.23,1876) were married on Jan.5,1887 in Walter, Russia. They had four children born in Walter:
1)Jacob Gies b.Oct.29,1897
2&3)the twins John Gies (Robert's Grandfather) & Henry Gies were both born Sept.17,1902
4)William "Bill" Gies b.Aug.10,1905

The Jacob Gies family's date of emigration ot New York was Apr.27,1907, and they came aboard the "S.S.Main". It is possible that this could have been the same voyage that brought the Henry Gies family over to the U.S. as well. Jacob settled his family in Walla Walla, WA & had five more children there:
5)Clara Gies b.July 29,1907
6)Alexander "Alec" Gies b.Feb.14,1910
7)Irene Gies b.Apr.25,1912
8)Harold Jacob Gies b.Nov.25,1916
9)Lucille Gies b.Dec.30,1920 (Lucille Whitman)
Jacob & Katherine became naturalized U.S. citizens on Dec.5,1916 in Walla Walla. Jacob lived until Sept.1924 and Katherine lived until Aug.10,1961.
I also have some info on the Christian Gies branch of the family which I will post at a later time. I hope this has been helpful. Please feel free to write me anytime at my email address: al-harris@juno.com

Would love to make contact with Schissler (many spellings) family from Walter. My mother's father is Ned Lacey Schissler. His father was Conrad Henry Schissler, b.Jun 20, 1897 in Walter (with a twin sister, Catherine, born the same day.) Their parents were Conrad Heinrich Schissler (b.10March1871 d.25OCT1948) and Elizabeth Klippert. They immigrated to Lincoln Nebraska and then removed to Saginaw Michigan where my mother was born.

The information I have from Walter shows that my Schoessler line began with Johann Caspar Schoessler, who was born around 1744 in Langenschwartz, Hesse, Germany, and removed to Walter with his wife Margaretha, who he married approximately 1766, before the birth of their first son in 1770 in Walter.

The line of descent includes marriages to:
Anna Catharina BLOCK
Catharina SCHIFFNER
Anna Maria ??? (m.2. Barbara Eisenach - not my line)
Magdalena KAMMERZELL
Elizabeth KLIPPERT

My info shows Elizabeth KLIPPERT as the daughter of Helfrecht KLIPPERT and Margaret GAEST.

Please see my web page for more data.

I am descendant of these families and would love to share info with any other family members. Have good info on our family here in the states but not much else in Russia except some 1798 census info. Please contact me. Cecil jr.

I guess I am wanting to know how you are related. John and Anna are my Great Grandparents. I have been looking to see where everybody fits into this KlippertFamily.

I am looking for information on my great-great grandparents Conrad Melcher and Helena Schoessler who were both born in the village of Walter and later died in Brunnental. Their son Henry and his wife Katherine Kammercell, both born in Brunnental, immigrated to the Ritzville area of WA. state.

Does anyone have any information on the Jacob Beck family or the Benner family who lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and were from Walter? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Sharon Morgan

Looking for information on my grandparents immigrating to USA in 1911 from Walter, Russia. Can't find anything at the Ellis Island site. They went to Lincoln, Nebraska and then to Michigan I was told. What other ports of entry might they have come thru? Can someone help?

I have information on my Manweiler line from Rosenberg, Russia. Email and tell me exactly who or what you are looking for and i'll see if i can help. Mona

Same question as Mona. I have a few information on Mannweilers immegrating to the US. I am form the Swiss Mannweiler line.

I believe the wife of Erasus Klippert, born 22 Aug 1798 in Walter, died 29 Jan 1868 is Maria Margaretha Derr, born 8 May 1798 in Walter, died 16 Jan 1867 in Walter. This information was given to me by Dr. Pleve separate from the Derr chart since she was one of three Derr females whose parents could not be documented.

There were two Gies families living near Odessa, WA when I was growing up there. One that I have traced, since there is a direct relationship to the Derr ( originaly spelled DORR with umlate) family. He is Conrad Gies, born 8 Jan 1880 in Walter, died 1959 in Odessa, WA. He was the son of Jacob Gies and Elisabeth Hill. He married Anna Katharine Derr 18 Jan 1901 in Walter. She was born 21 Sep 1, 1880 in Walter and died 24 Dec 1971 in Odessa, WA. She was the daughter of Heinrich Derr and Dorothy Butherus. They had a huge family and I have all of them.
Incidentally, I did quite a bit of research on the early Gies family especially Balthasar from Burghaun who went with his brother to Walter Village. While there were no church records for Burgaun so I could not trace that family, I did by chance through research on the Klipperts find his future wife's family data in the village of Crainfeld, Germany. His wife was Catherina Rauber, whom he hastely married just prior to his departure to Russia. They married in Budigen, Germany on 10 June 1766. I have her family back to Johannes Rauber, born 1639 and his wife born 1643. I have copies of the Gothic script church book entries if anybody is interested. Catharina had quite a tragic childhood
I would love to buy a Gies chart prepared by Dr. Pleve if any one has one since this family is very large and related to many Germans from Russia in the U.S. For example my chart my Dr. Pleve shows Ernst Derr (b 1804/05)married ot Anna Catharina Gies.

I am looking for anyone with information on (I believe) John Grosse Walter, (my GG Grandfather), and two of his sons, Jacob Walter and George Walter, my G Uncle and G Grandfather respectively.

My G Grandfather emmigrated to Freeport, Illinois sometime between 1892 and 1906, I would love to know when and on what ship, as well as when he might have married.

I would also like to know if anyone can tell me what might have happened to my GG Grandfather. Apparently when his sons left for America, they were ostricized from the family, and most all contact was cut off. Rhumors also have it that my GG Grandfather might have been a city official-Mayor? or whatever.

There is also supposed to be some Gies, Schoessler and Schissler in our family, but don't know who or where.

I am attempting to locate information on my grandfather Johann George(John George)Linker who was born in Walter April 23, 1870. Father's name may be John Christian Linjker. Family info says that John George immigrated with my cousin's grandfather Henry Walter sometime before 1905. Supposedly they went to South America and then to US. Linker settled in Ritzville, WA and Walter setteled in Walla Walla. Any info would be appreciated.

My Conrad Heinrich Schoessler, b June 20, 1897, married an Elizabeth KLIPPERT, who I believe was the daughter of Helfrecht KLIPPERT and Margaret GUEST (GUISE?).

She also was born in Walter, date unknown.

Does anyone have more details on this family?
Thank you! Gary Warner<br>gar@askgar.com

I am looking for descendants of a Christian Walter, born 1 Jul 1827 in Walter. He married Maria Catharina Derr (Dorr) on 29 Dec 1849. She was born 15 Jul 1826 also in Walter. Her father was Ernst Derr, born 1804/5 who married Catharina Gies. Thanks in antipation.

Searching for the present e-mail address of "Pattyan@jceinc.com", who posted a search for family of Katrina Ament, b. Jan 5, 1862 in Walter.

I live in Walla Walla, WA, and am doing a scrapbook of my family. My Great-Great-Great-Great Grandparents went to Walter, Russia. I am trying to get any information that I can on this town and the Wagners. My Great Grandmother lived here, Lydia Wagner-Sweesey. If anyone has any info, I would love it! Thanks

I'm interested in making contact with anyone with information on the 1767 Original Settlers for Walter.

I have recently received an extraction of Niedermittlau, Germany Church records for the Reusswig/Reiswig families. I have found a possible match for Reiswig/Reisbig settlers to Stephan, Norka, and Belowesch, and now would like to search for the Reiswig settlers to Walter.

I am a descendant of Conrad Butherus who came to America from Walter at the turn of the 19th-20th century. I am interested in gaining information about the derivation of the family name. Do you have any related information or guidance on how to proceed? Thank you for any assistance that you might be able to provide.

I have infomation on the Manweiler line migrating from Germany to Russian then to the US.

Please help find my relatives. They were from Messer, Neu Messer, Kolb, and the Walter area. They migrated to USA in 1908, some in 1913 and some prior to 1908. Need any info anyone has.

In June of this year, the descendants of Christian and Elizabeth (Gies) Butherus celebrated a family reunion which included a visit to the German-Russian museum in Lincoln Nebraska. Attending was Charlotte Smith, the eldest daughter of Christian and Elizabeth who was born in Walter Russia in 1908. A family history including photos is being assembled, and will be made available to anyone interested.
